Local know-how

Plumbing here is a little different

Most of Suffolk County isn't on public sewers. Many homes around Centereach rely on cesspools or septic systems, so a "clogged drain" can turn out to be a full or failing cesspool. Since 2019 a failed cesspool can't be replaced with another cesspool (read the guide). Hard winter freezes also make burst pipes and frozen hose bibs common from December to February.

Local plumbing guides

Before you hire: 4 checks that take 5 minutes

  1. License: Suffolk County generally requires a Master Plumber license to run a plumbing business here. Search the County's license lookup by business name or license number (license info).
  2. Price on the phone: ask for the trip/diagnostic fee and whether pricing is flat-rate or hourly, including after hours.
  3. Permit: for water heaters, gas work, and sewer or cesspool work, ask who pulls the town/village or County permit.
  4. Written quote before work, with parts, labor and cleanup listed.
